Bill Milbrodt's idea for the Car Music Project inspired an iconic 2008 commercial for Ford of Europe named "Ford Focus Orchestra". In
the spot, musicians play an elegant piece of orchestral music on instruments made from Ford Focus car parts.
Milbrodt led a team of people to produce those instruments from
two European Ford Focus cars. He hired Ray Faunce -- who had
created his Car Music Project instruments -- as Lead Designer and
Fabricator. The task was to create car part instruments that could
play music written by composer Craig Richey before the
instrument design process even started. The final music was
recorded on the Focus instruments at Capitol Records in Los
Angeles; and the commercial was shot on a Universal soundstage
about seven weeks after the design process began.
When Ford Focus Orchestra aired on British television in February, 2008, some people did not believe that the music in the commercial
was really performed on the car part instruments. This resulted in an entirely new and separate project called "Focus on the Move".
